All of you know, that we have had an ongoing campaign, challenging our elected officials and FPL on bringing out of state contractors onto our major construction jobs and using mostly out of state workers. We have taken untold numbers of photos of the out of state license plates on these jobs. Our Bldg. Trades guys spoke to the police about this being a violation of the law, and because they consider it minor in their scheme of things, it has been ignored. The law is that within 48 hours, an out of state worker has to establish residency via Florida license plates and driver''s licenses in order to work on a job in Florida. Sean was going to an American Cancer meeting a month or so back, that we knew Sheriff Bradshaw was attending. I asked him to give my card to the Sheriff and tell him I needed to speak with him personally. Sheriff Bradshaw called me two weeks ago, and I complained that his Department was not enforcing the law on these out of state workers.
The Sheriff called me this morning and said he wanted me to know that when I tell him something, he takes it seriously. Deputies went to the Solid Waste Authority site on 45th Street and issued tickets for the out of state license plates. They also told the people that they would be keeping an eye on them, basically said "We will be back."
It is small consolation for not having our people doing the work, but it has been a major issue to our union workers who have to drive by these sites and see these autos.
